Easter and spring in the archipelago’s museums

With the arrival of the Easter holidays, the museums and archaeological sites belonging to the Tuscan Archipelago Museum System (S.M.AR.T.), offering extended opening hours, guided tours and educational workshops for all ages.

The heterogeneous museum facilities of the region offer cultural experiences in all their forms: archaeological parks and museums, ancient fortresses, geomineralogical and industrial archaeological museums, modern and contemporary art collections, mines and collections of various kinds, testifying to the rich diversity of an archipelago inhabited and frequented since ancient times.

Places where stories of Etruscans, Romans and fierce pirates are intertwined with those of illustrious frequenters, from Cosimo de' Medici to Napoleon to Sandro Pertini.

The extensive opening calendar and the proposed initiatives represent a real opportunity to discover the permanent collections within the islands' museums and the scenic archaeological areas by the sea, to get up close and personal with the wonders of the area during one of the most evocative times of the year.

Campo nell'Elba

MUM - Luigi Celleri Mineralogical Museum (San Piero):
Open to the public until April 15 with the following hours: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. (closed Mondays)
And from April 16 to May 31: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (closed every Monday except April 18 and 25 when it will be open to the public).

Geo-experience in spring: visit to MUM and Grotta d ' Today

Monday, April 18, 2022 , 3:00 p.m.
Visit to the Luigi Celleri Mineralogical Museum and its beautiful collection of pegmatites. This will be followed by a short excursion to one of the most important mineralogical sites in the area, Grotta d'Oggi, an archaeo-mineralogical tour to discover the men and places that made San Piero's minerals famous throughout the world.

Capoliveri

The museums of the municipality of Capoliveri (Museo del Mare and Museo della Vecchia Officina) will be open to the public April 15-22. In addition to the opening, educational activities and guided tours of the Mines will be offered:

Guided tours through the heart of the mine:
Level 1 - classic route: A walk along the main tunnel, easier underground experience, no elevation gain .

Level 2 - deeper route: A walk along the tunnel reaching 24 meters below sea level (ages 12 and up)
On April 15 and 18 at 11:30 a.m.; April 16 and 17 at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.; April 19 at 12 p.m.

Marciana

Marciana Archaeological Museum

On Saturday, April 16, Sunday, April 17, and Monday, April 18, 2022, the archaeological museum will be open to the public 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m.
The important Elban museum offers its valuable collection of archaeological artifacts to guests and residents who would like to visit the village of Marciana over the Easter weekend. You will be welcomed and involved by the stories and enthusiasm of Angelo Mazzei, exquisite host.

Rio nell'Elba

In the municipality of Rio, it is open to the public every day the Rio Marina Mining Museum with the following hours: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
While the opening of the Rio Elba Mining District Archaeological Museum is scheduled from June 1.

Roman Villa of the Caves , The Path of the Rada

Sunday, April 17 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
A slow walk for the whole family, which will lead from the San Giovanni thermal basin to the Villa delle Grotte, a luxurious Roman residence dating back to the 1st century BC.

Hike to Volterraio: we discover the access from the east trail
Saturday, April 16, 2022, 4:30 p.m.
The hiking route involves walking along part of the Volterraio provincial road (about 2 km) from the locality of Le Panche (Rio nell'Elba) to the beginning of the trail.
The hike will be led by a Park Guide who, along the way, will frame Volterraio from a historical perspective and illustrate the naturalistic context. Upon reaching the summit, the Fortress will be visited and there will be time to take photographs and admire the grandiose panorama.

Duration: 3 hours
Difficulty: medium.

Pianosa Island

The history of Pianosa Island can also be told through an unusual route. In the area of the village - and beyond - there are still many traces of the places where the island's inhabitants have found their "rest," the eternal one, over the centuries. From prehistoric times to the present day, there are countless testimonies of human passage on Pianosa, and reconstructing a path through the burial places helps to understand the evolution of human events on this territory. Trekking that starts from the Museum of Geological and Archaeological Sciences and analyzes the prehistoric burials documented within the Museum, from prehistoric to Roman to medieval, and then stops at the catacombs and finally visits the civil cemetery.
