Portoferraio

Linguella Tower

Also known as Passannante's Tower for having housed the anarchist who made an attempt on the life of King Umberto I in this place when it was a penal bath, the tower tells fascinating stories, from its Medici foundation to the contemporary age

Need to know

The octagonal tower served as a watchtower and warehouse until the second half of the 18th century, when it was converted into a prison, a function that remained until the opening in the late 19th century of the larger prison inside Fort Longone in Porto Azzurro. Among the most famous figures imprisoned inside the tower were the anarchist Giovanni Passannante and the anti-fascist Sandro Pertini.
